There’s a reason companies spend billions of dollars on advertising: It works. Yet individuals – including children – and groups can be taught to deconstruct advertising and other media to limit its impact.
On the other hand, individuals and groups can better utilize media to communicate a message helpful to their consumers, clients and the broader population, even without tremendous resources.
We will examine the social science of media, critically evaluate common examples, and discuss tools to utilize with consumer populations. We will also examine tools participants can use to more effectively utilize media in their own services and work and begin development of a media strategy plan.
Objectives:
1. Gain skills to deconstruct media and to develop the same skills among consumers.
2. Identify applications and opportunities to better utilize media.
3. Begin creation of an individualized media strategy plan for each participant.
